Dhoni (2012) - Tamil Movie Review

Dhoni (2012) Produced and Directed by Prakash Raj tells the trials and tribulations of a middle class man Subraminum (Prakash Raj) a
State Government employee, widower and hard working father of two kids (Son Karthik - excellent performance by Aakash, daughter Kaveri - played effectively by Sriteja).

There are an ensemble of supporting cast who add strength to the screen play - Thalaivasal Vijay (Neuro Surgeon), Sharat Babu (Chief Minister), neighbourhood well wisher (Radhika Apte), Nasser (Cricket Coach), Murali Sharma (Ghani Bhai), Bhramanandam (Subraminum's boss) and Prabhu Deva (Guest appearance for a song). Prakash Raj has effectively used all the actors. Particularly - Radhika Apte, Ghani Bhai and Aakash providing stand out performance. In fact all the three stand up to Prakash Raj in performance.

Subramanium runs from dawn to dusk working hard to make ends meet by doing overtime at work, selling pickles to ensure that his son and daughter get a good education. His son on the other hand wants to become like Dhoni - the star cricketer and captain of the Indian team. He is not able remember the 17th table of multiplication, but he knows all the nitty-gritties of Cricket, right from dimension of Cricket ball to the circumference of Cricket stadium.

This is the story of every ambitious parent who wants his son and daughter to live and become their dreams and in the process not realizing the dreams of their children. It focusses on the Indian education system and the commercialization of education as school's focus on the 100% result in public exams trampling on the natural interests and talents of aspiring students.

Karthik fails to cope up with Subramanium's ambition, while his coach (Nasser) praises his cricketing talent. Subramanium takes his son out of the cricket coaching and puts him through a series of tuition classes without the desired result. His anger on his son takes serious consequences, which changes his outlook to life, makes him understand his son and brings about a change in his life and surrounding people. The screenplay is interspersed with irony, humour and melodious music of Maestro Illayaraja which will keep the audience engaged.

Prakash raj has shown time and again that he is a serious student of Cinema and movie making. This decade is going to show Prakash Raj in a new light. Dhoni brings out the star performer in Prakash Raj and he does not wait this the last over to hit the winning run...Enjoy Dhoni and its realistic story which will touch every heart. Rating - 3.5 / 5
